Helium is unusual because it is not mined like coal, iron, or copper. Instead, it is usually extracted from underground natural gas deposits that contain helium. 🧱 Where helium comes from Deep underground, tiny amounts of helium are continuously created when radioactive elements such as uranium and thorium naturally decay in rocks. Over millions of years, the helium migrates through the Earth's crust and can become trapped beneath impermeable rock layers, often in the same reservoirs as natural gas. 🧱 How helium is found Geologists search for: ✅ Natural gas fields ✅ Geological formations that can trap gases ✅ Areas with measurable helium concentrations Exploration involves seismic surveys, geological mapping, and test drilling, much like oil and gas exploration. Commercial extraction is typically worthwhile only when helium concentrations are high enough to justify processing costs. 🧱 How helium is extracted ✅ Drill a gas well Wells are drilled into underground gas reservoirs containing natural gas and helium. ✅ Bring the gas to the surface The gas mixture may contain methane, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and helium. ✅ Remove impurities Water, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and heavier hydrocarbons are removed before further processing. ✅ Cryogenic separation The gas is cooled to extremely low temperatures. Most gases liquefy before helium because helium has the lowest boiling point of any element (about -269°C / -452°F). This allows helium to remain gaseous while other components condense and are separated. ✅ Purification Additional processes such as adsorption and distillation increase purity, often to 99.99% or higher. 🧱 Where most helium comes from Historically, much of the world's helium has come from helium-rich natural gas fields in: Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas (United States) Wyoming (United States) Qatar Algeria Russia Canada 🧱 Why helium is considered a limited resource Unlike natural gas, helium is so light that when it escapes into the atmosphere, it eventually drifts off into space. Once released, it is effectively gone from Earth forever. That's why industries try to recover and recycle helium whenever possible. A fun Texas connection: the Texas Panhandle sits atop one of the most important helium-producing regions in the world, and the U.S. federal helium reserve was historically located near Amarillo. ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ https://pdf.benchchem.com/1201/A_Technical_Guide_to_the_Natural_Sources_and_Extraction_of_Helium_from_Natural_Gas.pdf https://biologyinsights.com/how-is-helium-manufactured-from-natural-gas/ https://rockymountainair.com/blog/how-is-helium-extracted/ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ Explain helium purification in more detail Which countries produce the most helium?
